About Me

My name is Laura Perry and I am a PhD candidate in the Emery lab at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario.

My love of science emerged at a young age, but I never imagined a future for myself in plant biology. I completed a BSc (Honours) with a double major in Biology and Anthropology with a passion for studying early Homo species. My undergraduate thesis examined the existence of symbolism in the Middle Paleolithic, which is quite different from my current research interests. In my final year as an undergraduate, I took a biology class taught by a new tenure-track professor, Dr. Marcel Dorken. It was in his class that I discovered I could use new molecular tools to answer evolutionary questions in ways I had never considered. Under his tutelage, my research into answering questions about plants began.
